HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Dell Dale Street runs north to south in east Harris County basically between I-10 and Wallisville Road.
In the past, the stretch of road has proved to be deadly -- claiming the life of Jacqueline Gonzalez nearly two years ago.
In the wake of Gonzalez's death, county leaders put a plan in place to make Dell Dale safer for pedestrians.
On Tuesday, the first phase was completed. Local leaders, including Harris County Pct. 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, alongside Gonzalez's parents celebrated the sidewalk opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Hallows apartment complex, which is along Dell Dale just south of Wallisville.
Gonzalez was killed when she was struck by a car while crossing the street. The improvements planned for Dell Dale include the first phase as well as two others.
Phases 2 and 3 include the installation of a traffic signal as well as better lighting.
