David Temple speaks to '48 Hours' in first interview since prison release

For the first time since being released from prison, David Temple is speaking out.

KATY, Texas -- For the first time since being released from prison, David Temple is speaking out.

The Katy man was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and sentenced to life in prison only to be released last December following new evidence.

Temple’s wife, Belinda, was killed by a shotgun blast to the head in their home. Prosecutors pointed to his extramarital affair as motive, but no weapon was ever found. Temple was sentenced to life.

“And I believe it's been unfair from day one,” Temple said.

Then, last year, his defense brought new evidence. An unnamed witness came forward and said the killer was the 16-year-old neighbor. Temple was granted a new trial.

Speaking to 48 Hours, Temple describes what walking out of prison was like.

“It's very long awaited,” he said. “Seeing my brothers and my mom and dad. But to hug them on the side of the fence it's been a long time coming.”

Temple is out on a $30,000 bond. His goal is to be exonerated, but his future is unclear as he faces the possibility of a new trial.

“I wouldn't wish a trial on my worst enemy,” Temple said. “For anybody to have to go through that, and until you've been through something of that magnitude, I don't think anybody or any family could even begin to understand.”

Meanwhile, Belinda Temple’s family still maintains David Temple is the killer.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg says a decision on whether to re-try the case won’t be made until the end of April at the earliest.

The full interview airs on 48 Hours at 9 p.m. CT Saturday on KHOU.
