HOUSTON, Texas — David Tzic tended to his 4-year-old son, Isaiah, Friday inside a home he mostly only leaves for medical appointments.
"He's definitely getting better," Tzic said. "We're trying our best."
Isaiah has come a long way since traumatic brain injuries stole, among other things, his speech and mobility.
“Lupe, my wife, would not want me to sit here, crying, feeling sorry for myself," Tzic said. "Which is why my mission is just to focus on him.”
Tzic lost his wife and infant son, Ezekiel, a year ago this week when Lupe’s SUV careened over a guardrail along the Grand Parkway at 290 and landed on its roof.

It’s hard to forget the dramatic damage left behind.
"It definitely doesn’t feel like I’ve gotten justice yet,” Tzic said.
Investigators said the driver of a sedan clipped at least two other vehicles, including Lupe's, which caused her to lose control.
And, although a resulting crash report lists the driver’s name, she’s never been charged with any crime related to this case.
“I’m sure she did not wake up and say “hey, I’m going to kill somebody today,” Tzic said. "As powerful as those words are, but that’s what happened.”
Tzic said he wished the driver had at least reached out.
That's assuming she’s learned about the results of what were very likely unintentional actions and the struggle this now-single father is left with despite having lots of help from loved ones.
"You know, you definitely learn to appreciate even more what it means to have a family," Tzic said. "What it is to be a family.”
Tzic was grateful his oldest child was not in the vehicle that day. He also thanked people from around the world who’ve sent him prayers and sent help via GoFundMe.
Meanwhile, at last check, the crash remains under investigation.
