THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Cyclist Moni Sosa took a scary spill that landed her in the hospital Tuesday evening in The Woodlands during a 30-mile group ride.
"And all I heard was everybody screaming, 'Nails, nails!'" Sosa told us from her hospital bed.
She and others suspect an angry driver threw roofing nails into the roadway shortly after a back-and-forth encounter.
The chain-reaction crash left Sosa seriously injured. She ended up with a broken collar bone, pelvic bone injuries and a concussion.
“I’m going to be missing work, I have a daughter to take care of," Sosa said through tears. "I’m not going to be able to cycle for I don’t know how long.”
An avid cyclist with years of experience, Sosa only recently started riding with The Woodlands group.
She said she’s had encounters with disgruntled drivers before but this was the worst experience.
"She fell extremely hard," fellow rider Thomas Anselmi said.
He told us that he was right behind Sosa when it happened and was going about 25 mph at the time.
"We did see the same car driving aggressively against us that day and also immediately preceding the event,” Anselmi told us.
He shared some photos from the aftermath, including a responding deputy holding some of the nails.
"It’s okay to be aggravated," Anselmi said. "We would rather you pull over and talk to us.”
"Honestly, I don’t feel that he intended to hurt anybody," Sosa said. "But they don’t realize that they can hurt us.”
Despite this setback, Sosa said she fully intends to ride again.
"It’s what we do, it’s our passion, we love it,” she said.
Friends set up a GoFundMe to help Sosa cover medical and other expenses. Lots of people from the cycling community are pitching in.
Meanwhile, there’s no update from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office regarding a possible investigation.
