HOUSTON — A pleasant venue near Plantersville was dreary and wet on Thursday but it set the perfect scene last Saturday for Tony Clark and his new bride, Chelsie.
"It went really, really well," Tony said. "It was great, a great celebration.”
Clark shared several photos from the wedding that went off without a hitch until cash-filled cards from several family members disappeared from a congratulations box.
"They just kind of asked, 'Hey, what did you think about our card.' And we were, like, 'What?'" Tony said.
They later reviewed surveillance video from a reception hall when the wedding guests and couple were outside taking pictures. They said it appears to show an off-duty Grimes County Sheriff’s deputy working security at the wedding allegedly taking the cards.
He was even wearing a uniform.
KHOU 11 News chose to blur his face in the video since he has not been charged with anything at this time.
"Oh my gosh, and then he just goes into the bathroom,” Chelsie said while watching the video.
"My first reaction was just shock,” Tony said.
Tony said he was angry at first and then disappointed by the suspected theft at the hands of someone hired to keep things from happening.
"Apologize, give the money back," Tony said. "Honestly, that would, would go a long way,”
Tony contacted KHOU 11 News and the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office which is investigating the incident along with outside agencies. They’ve placed the deputy on administrative leave related to the incident that only slightly blemished a joyous occasion.
"But, for us, the magic from the event, is still there," Tony said. "We had an awesome, awesome wedding.”
Grimes County Sheriff Donald Sowell said he’s disappointed if what the video appears to show is true.
