TEXAS CITY, Texas — Two people floating in the water on a cooler near the Texas City Dike were safely rescued Monday by the Coast Guard.
The stranded adults were aboard a 32-foot recreational boat before falling in the water.
The Coast Guard said they received a call from a mariner stating their boat was disabled and three adults had fallen overboard. The person also said the boat was drifting towards the rocks and there was still one adult and six children on the vessel.
The mariner was able to rescue one of the adults from the water.
The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a helicopter crew to rescue the other two who were floating on a cooler.
Lt. j.g. Terrell Sisk said the vessel had the required amount of lifejackets but no one on the boat was wearing one, including the three people who had fallen overboard.
“This could have been a tragic situation,” said Lt. Sisk. “Unexpected events can happen while on the water, and in a moment mariners can find themselves in a dangerous situation. It's very much like a seatbelt; if you're not wearing it, it can't help save your life."
The disabled boat was towed to the Galveston Yacht Basin.
No injuries were reported.
Weather conditions were reported as 13 mph winds with 2-foot seas.
