HOUSTON — A 10-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition after deputies say he was shot when a fight broke out between a large group of people Wednesday night, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Precinct 3 deputies responded around 8 p.m. to the shooting on Tidwell Road near CE King Parkway in northeast Harris County.
The sheriff said during the fight within a large group of people someone went to get a pistol and started firing. That person eventually hit the 10-year-old boy.
Right now, it's not known if the boy was a target or just got caught in the crossfire. He was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery immediately. At last check, his status was critical.
The sheriff said he laments the young age of the victim and noted recent incidents involving young people at crime scenes.
“Very disturbing situation out here, “ he said. “We've all been paying close attention to the number of juvenile suspects and juvenile victims that we're seeing across our community. So it's really senseless and very disappointing.”
Right now, investigators said they are working on gathering evidence like video and witness testimony.
