GALVESTON, Texas – The Carnival Liberty cruise ship has arrived back in Galveston Monday morning after a woman fell overboard.
The cruise ship pulled in at about 7 a.m., just hours after the U.S. Coast Guard called off the search for 33-year-old Samantha Broberg.
The USCG had been searching for Broberg, who was reported missing from the Carnival Liberty around noon on Friday, about 200 miles southeast of Galveston.
Carnival crew members immediately began searching the boat for Broberg, but could not find her.
They later reported that video showed her falling overboard from the 10th deck around 2 a.m.
Something Carnival calls “risky” and a violation of their rules.
That’s when the boat’s master contacted the U.S. Coast Guard.
Rescue crews from Corpus Christi and Mobile, Ala. have used planes to search a combined area of more than 4,300 square miles but still have not found her.
A Carnival spokesperson tells us several people who may have had contact with Broberg have been interviewed.
However, they say no foul play is suspected at this time.
The FBI is coordinating with Carnival on the investigation, which is standard procedure in a case like this.
Carnival officials say their Care Team is providing support to Broberg’s family and those she was travelling with.
The woman’s family put out a statement over the weekend asking for privacy and saying they are “shocked and deeply saddened” over what happened.
That ship had left Galveston Thursday on a four-day cruise to Mexico.
Carnival has released the following statement:
"On Friday, May 13, 2016 a 33-year-old female guest on the cruise ship Carnival Liberty was reported missing by traveling companions. A ship-wide search was conducted along with a review of the ship’s camera footage. The camera footage indicates that the guest was sitting on a deck railing and fell backwards into the water. Authorities were notified including the U.S. Coast Guard which has been conducting search and rescue efforts in the area the ship was located when the individual was last seen. Carnival’s CareTeam is providing support to the guest’s traveling companions and family. We are keeping our guest and her loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time."
