HOUSTON — Did you hear it? From EaDo to Meyerland, residents are posting on social media about a loud boom heard across the city just before midnight late Monday.
According to various posts on NextDoor, Ring and Twitter, the boom could be heard in the Heights, Third Ward, West U, Bellaire and Meyerland areas.
Someone in Montrose says it was so loud it knocked their cat off their bed and shook their windows.
People from down in Alvin all the way up to Tomball say they heard it.
Houston police said they're aware of the noise that rattled so many, but they're not sure what it was, either. At least one off-duty officer called it in.
"I heard a loud, uh, what sounded like a loud, um, explosion. And someone called me and said it shook their house," the officer told dispatch.
Janet Hernandez shared a couple of Ring videos where you can heard the noise that apparently startled a cat.
Kathleen Feller shared this video from her Nest cam in the Near Me section on our app. She lives in the West U area.
Some people have suggested it might have been a transformer blowing, but it's unlikely the noise would have carried so far and been heard in such different parts of town.
Some thought maybe a lightning strike but there wasn't a thunderstorm, so that seems to be out.
There are others who thought it might be a sonic boom from a meteorite entering the atmosphere, but we have not seen any video of a fireball, though it was cloudy overnight making it harder to spot.
"It could have been a very fast-moving object like a meteor or aircraft. Something moving faster than the speed of sound. That would give that sonic boom," said Dan Reilly with the National Weather Service.
