Houston Federation of Teachers gives away thousands of free books at 'Reading Opens the World' event

The Houston Federation of Teachers is hosting a free book giveaway on Saturday in northeast Houston.

HOUSTON — Thousands of books were given away for free Saturday in northeast Houston.

It was during an event called “Reading Opens the World," sponsored by the Houston Federation of Teachers.

The 40,000 books that were inside a classroom within the Houston Community College North Forest campus had familiar and new stories for children of all ages.

Tyanna Stansbury, 5, fell in love with one of the characters inside one of the books she picked up.

“It says girl power because she’s so beautiful and she’s a genie,” she said.

Educators who attended the event collected books to foster the growth of their students.

“I feel like first grade is when they’re starting to read, and like get introduced to more complex reading and reading everywhere,” teacher Kiyah Smith said.

Educators were able to pick up to 50 free books for their classroom libraries. Each child was eligible to get 10 free books or 30 per family.

“Going to buy a book every week, every two weeks, it can be pricey, so it’s a great opportunity. I’m very, very excited it was provided for the community,” said Stansbury's grandmother Angela Brown.
