Black Art Houston: Celebrate contemporary artists at Houston museums this weekend

The celebration of contemporary Black art includes events Saturday and Sunday at the Museum of Fine Arts and several other local museums.

HOUSTON — A celebration of contemporary Black art will take place throughout Houston this weekend.

Black Art Houston is an immersive experience featuring exhibitions, open studios and cultural events at local museums and other venues. It's a chance to connect with artists and explore Houston's "rich tapestry of artistic expression."

The citywide initiative coincides with the opening of Museum of Fine Arts Houston's exhibition "Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage."

The exhibition includes works by Kehinde Wiley, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists.

His exhibit, "Kehinde Wiley: An Archeaology of Science," showcases detailed paintings and sculptures of Black and Brown people on the heels of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“This work being in Houston is an opportunity to see my paintings and sculptures in a completely new dynamic, to see it in a different part of America, and also see an amazing curatorial staff presenting it in a way that’s new, fresh and exciting," Wiley said.
