Furniture warehouse goes up in flames in northwest Houston

Smoke from a massive warehouse on the northwest side fire could be seen for miles in all directions.

HOUSTON — A massive fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a northwest Houston furniture warehouse.

Heavy smoke could be seen for miles. By Friday morning at 5 a.m., the fire appeared to still be burning.

According to the Houston Fire Department, the fire was at a warehouse on Bingle Road just south of US-290. Officials said the warehouse stored furniture, but people we spoke with said it is also a discount store for things like electronics, appliances, toys and clothes.

Officials said they first got the call just after 3 p.m. As of 5 a.m., there were still two ladder trucks on scene to contain the fire and put out any hot spots.

Arson investigators were working to find out how the fire started. Investigators said that while they're not sure how the fire started, part of the reason it was so big is because there were a lot of wood pallets at the warehouse.

Authorities said there were no reports of injuries.

Officials were at the scene conducting air and water tests and said there was no danger to the surrounding community and no need for a shelter-in-place order. They also said there was a nearby homeless encampment but no injuries were reported there, either.

Investigators said the fire started at the back of one of the buildings and then spread to the inside and outside of the buildings. They said firefighters remained defensive and never went on the offensive as they battled the flames.

It's unclear how long it would take crews to contain the fire and put it out. Crews plan to bring in heavy machinery to remove the furniture inside the building once it's safe to do so.
