Driver dies after cement truck crashes over side of Beltway 8 overpass, Pct. 4 says

Constable Mark Herman said the cement truck went off the side of the Beltway onto the feeder road below. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — One person died and two others were hospitalized Tuesday when a concrete mixer truck drove off Beltway 8 and crashed on the feeder road below, according to authorities.

It happened just before 9 a.m. along the Beltway at Bammel North Houston Road.

Investigators said the driver of the concrete truck died. They said it all started when the concrete truck collided with a delivery truck in the westbound lanes of Beltway 8. The concrete truck crashed through a barrier wall and fell to the feeder road below, where it ended up upside down.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office officials said five vehicles were involved when all was said and done.

"The other truck that was involved was some type of delivery truck that was turned over on its side on the main lanes on the elevated portion (of Beltway 8)," Michael James, with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office, said.

As the concrete truck fell, it knocked over a pole that fell on top of a black sedan. The driver of the car was taken to an area hospital but she, along with the other people who were injured, is expected to be OK.

"The driver of the concrete truck is deceased. There were two other parties involved in other vehicles that received non-life threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals," James said.

Those who heard the crash said it was terrifying.

"I was in my car listening to music -- the music was loud, so I don’t know how I heard it over my loud music, but it was like if you’ve ever heard a car accident, but that times three, and like 10 seconds longer. It was just like something falling, basically," Octavia Roberts said.

Juanita Barrientos showed up at the crash scene to pray for the person who died. While holding a cross, she said the wreck reminds her of her two sisters who died in a crash 26 years ago.

Investigators weren't ready to say which truck was to blame for the initial collision on the Beltway.

The crash cleared after several hours of cleanup efforts.
