Galveston board votes to reopen negotiations with Battleship Texas

There has been a lot of back-and-forth over where exactly the ship will dock when extensive renovations are completed.

GALVESTON, Texas — The board overseeing the Port of Galveston is reopening talks about what to do with Battleship Texas.

The 112-year-old Navy ship is currently docked in Galveston while it undergoes extensive renovations.

There has been a lot of back-and-forth over where exactly the ship will dock when it reopens for public tours.

Just a few weeks ago, the Galveston Wharves Board voted to end negotiations to dock the ship at Pier 20 -- a popular tourist area.

Businesses protested the lease citing concerns over parking loud machinery and other issues.

On Monday, the board met again and reversed their decision and voted to continue the discussions.

"Well, I think Pier 15 is a better location if it's feasible. So the port director in his administration is going to have to do some due diligence to see whether it will work," former Galveston City Council member Elizabeth Beaton said.

The board also voted to form a committee to move the negotiations along.

For now, Battleship Texas is set to start restoration tours later this month.
