Former Barbers Hill ISD student at center of hair dispute asks court for relief to return to district

The judge in the case did not give a timeline for a ruling, other than saying it would come soon.

GALVESTON, Texas — A federal judge in Galveston is expected to issue a ruling that could allow a former Barbers Hill ISD high school student to return to classes in the district.

Darryl George's and Barbers Hill ISD's attorneys presented arguments on a motion to request or deny injunctive relief that would allow the student to return to a typical district classroom.

The judge decided George had enough standing to ask for a temporary restraining order that could allow him to return to Barbers Hill ISD.

George was suspended more than a year ago for allegedly violating the school dress and hair policy because of the length of his hair, which is worn in locs. He and his family argued the suspension violated Texas' CROWN Act, which protects against hair discrimination.

George was placed into in-school suspension since then, but at the beginning of this year, he transferred to a different school over mental health concerns. Now, he wants to return to Barbers Hill High School to finish his senior year.

The judge in the case did not give a timeline for a ruling, other than saying it would come soon.
