HOUSTON — The Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation announced a study Thursday to determine the fate of Houston's historic Astrodome. The evaluation, to be conducted by Kirksey Architecture, will assess two primary options: basic restoration and demolition.
The restoration assessment will focus on fundamental systems like plumbing and HVAC to achieve basic operational status, rather than full historic preservation. The study will also calculate demolition costs as an alternative scenario.
"The Astrodome has been a symbol of Houston's innovation and community pride for decades, since 1965," said HCSCC Chairman Bishop James Dixon.
The study comes as the Astrodome Conservancy promotes its "Vision: Astrodome" initiative, which HCSCC has agreed to consider in its master planning process.
The evaluation begins in the coming weeks as part of HCSCC's broader effort to ensure NRG Park's facilities continue serving Harris County residents effectively.
