HOUSTON — Five neglected horses from Montgomery County are getting plenty of tender loving care from veterinarians at the Houston SPCA.

MCSO deputies seized the horses from the owner’s property in Montgomery earlier this week.

Investigators said they first learned about the malnourished horses in July. They gave the owner a second chance, along with recommendations regarding their care.

The owner initially complied, and had the horses checked by a veterinarian.

On Oct. 9, deputies returned to check on the horses and said their condition had declined again. Their ribs were poking out and their hoofs were in bad shape.

A team from the Houston SPCA seized the horses and moved them to their facility.

“We are working to obtain custody, so the animals can eventually find loving homes,” said Houston SPCA spokesperson Julie Kuenstle.

If the SPCA wins custody of the horses, they will be available for adoption once they're nursed back to health.
