HOUSTON — An Aldine family is fighting to keep the land that five generations have grown up on.
The Aldine Independent School District is considering using eminent domain to seize it and use it for parking next to the district's football stadium that's under construction.
On that land sits 79-year-old Travis Upchurch's home. It's land where five generations have been raised and family members are fighting to stop it from being taken from them.
"We're trying to figure out a way for our dad to stay in his home, which is his wish, that hasn't changed. So we're all looking forward to having this resolved in a way that we can go back to our normal lives. My dad's health has gone downhill," Tara Upchurch said.
The community is backing the Upchurch family. People have attended board meetings and also written letters expressing their concerns.
Family members and family friends said they haven't been able to talk to the school board directly for months.
The board is expected to vote on Tuesday on whether or not to use eminent domain to take the land off Aldine Meadows Road. Family members are hoping they have a change of heart.
Tara Upchurch said it would be devastating if the land was taken from the family. She said there are countless memories that were made there and they just want more time to come up with a compromise so her father can live the rest of his life there.
