HOUSTON — An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed Friday in west Houston, according to police.
Officials said the young girl may have shot herself, but it's still unclear.
This happened at about 12:40 p.m. at an apartment complex on Hayes Road, just off Westheimer Road.
Police said the child was in the home with her grandfather when the shooting happened. The grandfather called 911 and first responders took the girl to the hospital where she died.
Police are investigating how this shooting happened. They said a weapon, possibly a revolver, was found on a bed and it appears only one shot was fired.
In a week, three children have been shot in the Houston area. Two of them died, including this 8-year-old girl.
The first shooting happened on Thursday, June 29. A 3-year-old boy was shot in the face at a home off Ozark Street. The child was taken to a hospital where he died Sunday.
On Thursday, a child was injured when police said she was accidentally shot in the foot after getting a hold of a gun and dropping it. It's unknown how seriously she was hurt, but she is expected to survive.
"Here is the plea to the parents, to the caregivers. Please lock up your weapons," said Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu. "These are senseless. These are preventable. There are lock boxes."
Cantu advised parents to keep their guns unloaded and teach their kids not to touch them if they ever come across one.
