HOUSTON — Clothing brand 75th and Canal is releasing a new collection called "Canal Street World Tour" that highlights Houston's street culture and KHOU 11's Stephanie Simmons sat down with its founder, Victor Bernal, to find out what it's all about.
"75th & Canal is actually an intersection on Houston's east side of Magnolia Park," Bernal said. "It's a neighborhood that my whole family originates from. We pulled direct from Houston's music culture, you know, the background of DJ Screw had a lot of influence on the city and just musically, what they created back then is something that really touched me growing up."
Bernal said the area of 75th and Canal has a lot of history with his family. His grandfather came from Mexico and worked at a mechanic shop there.
"When I wanted to name the brand something special, it had to come, like, something that was heartfelt, something that could constantly be built upon and name familiarity in other cities as well," he explained.
As for his staple theme "still holdin'," Bernal said it ties back into Houston's culture.
"It just means that, you know, we're still standing tall, we're still here presenting ourselves, right?" he said. "The cars, the culture, the way that we walk, talk and present ourselves -- that's still holdin'."
The brand is holding an event Saturday afternoon in partnership with Foot Locker at MacGregor Park from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in celebration of the new collection's release.
