How the 2024 CFP national championship game is benefitting Houston educators

Ahead of Monday’s CFP National Championship game at NRG Stadium, organizers said they are helping thousands of teachers across the area.

HOUSTON — The CFP Committee works to help educators around the country throughout the college football season. The CFP executive leader said the events leading up to Monday’s CFP National Championship game will leave a lasting impact on Houston educators.

“There will be a long-term impact on the city of Houston,” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said.

He told KHOU 11 News that the program helps teachers all over the country. They found out that Houston teachers have different needs.

“Recruiting and retaining teachers is a tough job,” CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority Janis Burke said. “We’re losing teachers in the field because I think they don’t always feel appreciated. So, we wanted to wrap our arms around every teacher in Harris County and within the surrounding areas.”

Burke said events like the Trophy Trot 5K and 10K, and the Taste of the Championship will benefit Houston teachers.

The Houston Loves Teachers campaign said it has impacted more than 25,000 teachers across the Houston area. Here are other statistics provided by the CFP Foundation.

  • $500,000 in DonorsChoose grants, six region-wide campus makeovers, ten campus art projects
  • $100,000 in grow your own HS investments, $250,000 for a bilingual media campaign
  • $200,000 in professional development grants
  • 3,000 teachers registered for Extra Yard for Teachers Summit
  • 10+ recognition events and 150+ campus recognition programs

The money will assist teachers with classroom needs, improve teacher retention, and make campus improvements. Houston ISD, Spring ISD, Alief ISD, Pasadena ISD and Channelview ISD are among the several districts impacted.

The Extra Yard for Teachers Summit, being held at the Wortham Theatre on Saturday at 3 p.m., will include development opportunities for educators, according to Burke.

“Fantastic, well-renowned speakers that are coming in an education session for our local teachers. We want [teachers] to be able to come out and take advantage of what the CFP has put together,” Burke said.
