18-year-old running for Pearland ISD School Board

This spring break, while his classmates are enjoying their time off, one high school senior is campaigning for a position on the Pearland ISD Board of Trustees.

PEARLAND, Texas -- Mikael Floyd isn't your typical high school senior.

The Dawson High School student says he's been involved in politics since he was in fourth grade.

"I was the one kid who had a Barack Obama bumper sticker on my bike as I rode around town," Floyd said. "Since then, I've worked on two Congressional campaigns, I've managed a state representative race, and I worked on a presidential campaign, managing it for our county."

This spring break, while his classmates are enjoying their time off, he's campaigning for a position on the Pearland ISD Board of Trustees.

"As a student, I've seen a lot more than the trustees have," Floyd said. "I've been with teachers, students and faculty members for nine and a half months out of the year for 40 hours a week. I just see flagrant issues in our district."

The 18-year-old is running against two-term incumbent Rusty DeBorde, who served as president during four of his six years on the board.

"I think when I first came on the board, the board was lacking cohesiveness," DeBorde said. "I think I was able to rise to the challenge and help us find that team spirit."

Though DeBorde says he's never been "lucky enough" to run unopposed, he has never faced an opponent Floyd's age. That's because Floyd is the youngest person to run for the position.

"Quite honestly, I think it's great that we have students who are coming out of our schools and wanting to invest in our community and serve," DeBorde said.

However, he adds a seat on the board could be overwhelming for someone who is still in high school.

"It took a lot of time and research for me to get my head around how all that works," DeBorde said. "We're just talking about the financial component of it."

Floyd says he's ready for the challenge.

"It's time for a new perspective: real leadership, real change," he said.

Pearland voters will decide between Floyd and DeBorde on May 6.
