HOUSTON — In a somber gathering in southeast Houston, friends and family remembered Sergio Rodriguez, the 15-year-old Milby High School student who died tragically on Dec. 9 after being struck by a train while trying to get to school.
The public vigil, held at a local funeral home, has become a focal point for grief and calls for increased railroad crossing safety. Rodriguez's cousin, Loruama Carias, remembered him as "the sweetest soul, like a teddy bear," highlighting the profound impact of his loss.
According to Houston police, Rodriguez was crossing train tracks on his way to Milby High School when he was hit by an oncoming train. The incident has since become a catalyst for community discussion about student safety near railroad crossings.
Rodriguez's parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit, adding legal pressure to mounting community concerns. During the vigil, family members expressed hope that their tragedy could drive meaningful change in local transportation safety.
"Kids need to get to school safely one way or another," Carias emphasized, reflecting the community's growing demand for improved safety measures.
The vigil and rosary service was from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
A BBQ benefit was planned on Saturday at Milby High School to support the Rodriguez family.
