KERRVILLE, Texas-- Fed up with anexploding deer population, the city of Kerrville has declared open season within city limits.
Starting this weekend, the south section of the Kerrville-Schreiner Park will be closed to hikers, bicyclists and picnic goers and will be open to bow-hunters.
I want to figure out where to sign up, said bow-hunting enthusiast Blake Kidder.
Kidder said he hopes he is one of the 50 people over the next three weeks that Kerrville will allow to bow-hunt deer inside the city park.
It may be a little different but at the same time you're hunting, said Kidder. As a hunter we are excited for once because we have the opportunity to do something we love and to help that deer population as well.
Kerrville Park Ranger James Lynch said if nothing is done to control the white-tail deer population, not only will it lead to more auto-deer collisions, but it will have negative health effects on the deer.
What happens is they (deer) eat up all their food sources and are competing against each other for survival, said Lynch.
The results of this city park hunt will be closely watched by other Texas communities as the white-tail deer population has dramatically increased across the state in recent years.
