HOUSTON – A railroad crossing in southeast Houston is among the most dangerous in the United States according to a newly released list by the Federal Railroad Administration.
That crossing is on Mykawa near Long just north of Interstate 610 in southeast Houston.
According to the FRA, only nine crossings in the entire nation had more crashes in the last decade.
Federal statistics show the crossing has been the site of 12 crashes that injured five people since 2006.
The KHOU 11 News I-Team highlighted problems at the crossing two years ago, and uncovered a 2004 study commissioned by Harris County that recommended the crossing be eliminated and replaced with a series of bridges and underpasses.
But those recommendations still haven’t become reality.
Instead, the City of Houston, along with the railroads, FRA and Texas Department of Transportation are planning a series of changes including new crossing gates, signals, signs and some road improvements around the crossing.
Work is expected to begin this summer.
