HOUSTON -- There is a new center to help public intoxicated people avoid jail and seek sobriety -- the center gives them hope.
The Houston Center for Sobriety is located in downtown Houston.
We ll offer them the resources to get help, said Recovery Coach Semarlon Williams.
In the past, people who were publicly intoxicated often wound up in jail which cost the city millions of dollars.
People are not forced to stay there and usually stay no more than six hours. People who are arrested for driving drunk are still taken to jail.
People not behind the wheel are given a second chance and not charged with a crime.
About 100 people were being brought into the center each week, and the number was expected to rise. Only police may bring individuals in to the center.
All it takes is one person to reach out to you for help, said Recovery Coach Trudy Wollgast.
