Tweens going all out for their skin, but are the products they're using safe?

There are some pre-teens known as "Sephora Kids" who are getting products that could be risky for their age.

HOUSTON — Many Americans are concerned about their skin care routine, but the age of the skin-conscious Americans is getting younger.

UT Physicians Pediatrician Dr. Sarah Cavenaugh had some thoughts about the trend that has children flocking to Sephora.

"When I start asking them, 'What do you do to start taking care of your skin right now?' Their product list is a lot longer than it used to be," Cavenaugh said.

Tweens are going all out to feel comfortable in their own skin, but there's another group of skin-conscious children, known as "Sephora Kids," who might be doing more harm than good.

"They're using things that aren't made for kids, that could be dangerous for them," Cavenaugh said.

Pre-teens have been flooding Sephora stores in search of skincare products that would be considered risky for kids their age to use.

"I think one of the biggest ones is the retinol-type products. We don't know if they're safe for kids," Cavenaugh said.

Though doctors commend children who are going the extra mile to take care of their skin, it's best for the kids to keep it simple.

"Wash with a basic cleaner twice a day and use a moisturizer with sunscreen in the mornings," Cavenaugh said.

Children are encouraged to leave the retinol on the store shelves, at least until they're closer to adult age.
