HOUSTON -- Earl Campbell, who electrified a generation of Houston sports fans as the powerful running back for the Luv Ya, Blue! era Houston Oilers, spent three days at The Methodist Hospital last week undergoing a battery of medical tests.
His son, Christian, told KHOU 11 News the NFL Hall of Famer has had problems keeping his balance. He also has difficulty moving around without canes or a walker.
Doctors who initially feared he might have Lou Gehrig s Disease instead discovered problems with nerves in his back, Campbell s son, Christian, told KHOU 11 News.
He doesn t have brain damage, he said. Thank God, it s nothing that can t be treated.
Campbell barreled into behemoth tacklers and slammed through scrimmage lines for the Oilers and the New Orleans Saints, but his punishing eight seasons left him with a legacy of chronic health problems. He s undergone back surgery and both of his knees have been replaced, his son said.
It s a big cause of concern, said Christian Campbell.
Campbell will undergo treatment sometime in the next few weeks, his son said.
