Students at one Alief ISD school will return to class Monday a big surprise from Kendra Scott

The jewelry icon and philanthropist set up a Yellow Library at Best Elementary School Thursday, which will be there for the students' return.

HOUSTON — Students at one school in the Alief ISD will get a big surprise when they had back to class on Monday.

Billion dollar jewelry brand founder and philanthropist Kendra Scott was at Best Elementary School on Thursday to help set up her Yellow Library. The free book initiative brings more than 5,000 diverse and bilingual books to students in underserved communities.

It’s an initiative that Alief ISD Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays says makes a huge difference as districts battle severe underfunding.

“We are, of course, struggling financially, big deficits in the state of Texas or meeting teacher needs, so when it comes to resources  like this, they help fill in the gaps.

Dr. Mays went on to say the district is focused on third-grade literacy rates and this is just one way they hope to make improvements.

Yellow is Scott’s signature color.
