Katy ISD amends library policy for the fourth time to ban more content

The proposed amendment would also require bookfair vendors to follow the library guidelines.

KATY, Texas — The Katy ISD school board has amended its library policy three times since it went into effect about a year ago.

Now, a fourth change adds books on gender fluidity to the list of banned content.

"Gender fluidity materials are complex, confusing and should be addressed with parental guidance. Not suitable for lower grades," Katy ISD School Board President Victor Perez said.

It was another packed house at the board meeting on Tuesday as parents shared their opinions on the newest proposed change. Some were in favor while others opposed the change.

"This is about using wisdom and common sense to protect the minds of our children," one parent said.

The proposed amendment would also require bookfair vendors to follow the library guidelines. Some said the changes aren't necessary.

"Policies are already in place ... to restrict materials for their children," another parent said.

The amendment to the library policy passed with five in favor and two members abstaining.
