HOUSTON — Houston ISD released its 30-page compensation plan for the 2024-2025 school year on Tuesday.
The district said it's offering salaries that are "significantly higher than surrounding districts," along with other competitive advantages.
According to the district, the average salary for teachers across the state of Texas is $55,616. Houston ISD said its starting teacher salary is $64,000.
The pay gets even better for HISD teachers in the New Education System or NES schools. The average salary for high school teachers at NES schools will start at $82,816, according to the district.
"So far all of our positions at NES schools, and keep in mind, we have a variety of salaries depending on the role, when we average all of those, you can have zero years of teaching experience, start with Houston ISD and make that salary," said Cheif Human Resource officer Jessica Neyman. "When you couple that salary with the number of work days in the year, especially the time off that is typical for a teacher...you're making still $82,816 for working that schedule."
Those NES high school teachers with five years of experience will receive an average starting salary of $88,816, Neyman said.
For special education teachers at NES schools, the average starting salary is $86,000, according to HISD. For those with five-plus years in special education, the average starting salary is $92,000. Non-NES special education teachers will start at an average salary of $80,000, the district said.
This new compensation plan starts July 1, 2024.
