HOUSTON, Texas — At least 26 additional campuses will join the district’s New Education System, or NES, next year.
That's the controversial program ushered in amid the state takeover aimed at improving academics.
"Next school year, they will be NES schools,” said state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles during a one-on-one interview ahead of the announcement.
Information regarding which schools was embargoed until Tuesday at 5 a.m.
The list includes Austin, Sharpstown, and Westbury high schools in addition to many elementary and middle schools.

“Twenty schools have an 'F' rating that are not already NES schools,” Miles said.
Those schools will join NES along with six others with low “D” ratings while 24 campuses with mid to high “Ds” have an option.
"And we will take up to 14 of those to be NES schools in the '24-'25 school year,” Miles said.

Miles said an internal team used raw state data and methodology to determine the ratings and which schools would join NES.
Those campuses feature more rigorous and targeted instruction, different staffing models, and so-called TEAMS centers filling former library space.
We asked Miles if he expected a similar backlash to what occurred last year.
"Yeah, we’re prepared for that," Miles said. "But I think you won’t have as much anxiety as we did back in August.”
NES’s initial rollout prompted criticism and even protests.
However, Miles claims the most recent assessment of math, reading, language and science performance shows district-wide improvements.
"The NES schools did even better," Miles said. "So, the NES program is significantly higher that the non-NES scores.”
Miles said he expected to be held accountable during out first interview with him in June, 2023.
"If I can’t get the job done, if we don’t get the outcomes, then I need to be fired,” said Miles back then.
It's a position he still holds seven months later.
"If we fail," said Miles. "I mean, if we don’t get improvement, the intervention may go on and the board should get somebody else.”
