HOUSTON — Parents in the Montrose area are angry after some recent changes at Houston ISD.
Parents are worried their kids won’t be able to attend their neighborhood school. This concern was caused by a motion passed by the HISD school board last week.
"Why fix it when it wasn’t broken?" said a concerned resident.
Parents are upset their children will not automatically be allowed to attend their neighborhood school, Wharton Dual Language Academy. Many parents said they only moved to the area for the school.
“I previously lived in a different school zone. Sold my house just to make sure I had a seat for my oldest daughter when we first started there," said Eric D’Olive.
On Tuesday, parents organized a meeting to voice their concerns to one board member, Adam Rivon, who also lives in the area.
KHOU 11 News reached out to the HISD for an explanation. They said in order to preserve Wharton as a dual language immersive experience, they needed to categorize the school as a Separate and Unique School.
The district said students already enrolled there will get to stay, but anyone else who wants to enroll even if they live in the school zone needs to contact the district.
"Now my home is de-zoned I have no idea where my child will ultimately go to school," said one concerned parent.
“It’s pretty bewildering and scary honestly," said a concerned resident, Elaine Savoy.
"I am here to hear your perspective. Direct feedback," said school board member Adam Rivon.
KHOU 11 News was told the district will host a series of meetings where parents will be able to give feedback for a plan. The school board gave HISD 60 days to produce a plan on what will happen with those students zoned to this school.
