HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — The question may have crossed your mind at one point or another: "How much does the superintendent of my child's school district make?"
That's public information and KHOU 11's sister station, WFAA, requested and received the data for the 2023-2024 school year.
Nine of the highest 20 salaries in the state last school year were in the Houston area, including the top two: Cy-Fair ISD Superintendent Mark Henry at $536,775 and Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Gregory Poole at $477,213. Henry's retirement went into effect in November.
Here's a look at the highest 15 salaries for superintendents in the Houston area for the 2023-2024 school year along with their rank in the state:
- 1. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Superintendent Mark Henry: $536,775 (enrollment of 118,470 students)
- 2. Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Gregory Poole: $477,213 (enrollment of 7,723 students)
- 6. Tomball ISD Superintendent Martha Salazar Zamora: $433,930 (enrollment of 22,273 students)
- 9. Klein ISD Superintendent Jenny McGown: $404,430 (enrollment of 53,093)
- 11. Katy ISD Superintendent Kenneth Gregorski: $384,495 (enrollment of 94,785 students)
- 12. Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles: $380,000 (enrollment of 184,109 students)
- 13. Fort Bend ISD Superintendent Christie Whitbeck: $377,000 (enrollment of 80,206 students)
- 18. Pasadena ISD Superintendent Ellen Powell: $360,600 (enrollment of 47,486 students)
- 20. Conroe ISD Superintendent Curtis Null: $356,957 (enrollment of 72,352)
- 21. Lamar CISD Superintendent Roosevelt Nivens: $354,341 (enrollment of 44,512)
- 22. YES Prep Public Schools Superintendent Mark Dibella: $352,800 (enrollment of 17,622)
- 28. Humble ISD Superintendent Elizabeth Celania-Fagen: $348,919 (enrollment of 48,552 students)
- 32. Clear Creek ISD Superintendent Karen Engle: $346,492 (enrollment of 40,132 students)
- 39. Brazosport ISD Superintendent Danny Massey: $337,674 (enrollment of 11,357)
- 42. Spring Branch ISD Superintendent Jennifer Blaine: $336,240 (enrollment of 33,407 students)

What's noteworthy that you can see in the chart is the state's second-highest-paid superintendent, Poole, leads Barbers Hill ISD which has an enrollment of just over 7,700 students.
