Unofficial results of HISD 2024 accountability ratings released, first results since takeover

HISD Superintendent Mike Miles said the district made big strides with the scores. He said if this continues, the takeover could be over sooner rather than later.

HOUSTON — The unofficial results are in for Houston ISD’s 2024 Texas Accountability Ratings which measures academic achievement.

It’s the first results since the state takeover of the Houston Independent School District under state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles.

There were several improvements made by schools across the district, especially when it comes to state assessments.

According to the ratings report, the number of “A” and “B” rated schools increased by 82%, from 93 in 2023 to 170 in 2024.

Meanwhile, the number of “D” and “F” rated schools fell by nearly two-thirds, from 121 schools in 2023 to 41 in 2024.

It's achievements which Miles said are made up of many factors, including a stronger curriculum, quality instructional materials along with good leadership and culture.

“I knew we would do well, but this is phenomenal,” he said. “And what that tells me is that you have overwhelming majority of the teachers and principals embrace the change and the students, you know students are great no matter what you do. They will always rise to the level of expectations.”

HISD made the decision to release its individual school ratings after a court blocked the Texas Education Agency from releasing the 2024 Texas Accountability Ratings.

The district is in its second year of the state takeover and Miles said if the district continues to perform at this rate, the state takeover will end sooner than later.

According to state law, the district has to receive a passing grade for two consecutive years before the board of managers are removed.
