More than 160 people show up to speak at last HISD board meeting before vote on historic bond

Thursday's board meeting was the last one before the November election and community members came out in droves to talk about the controversial measure.

HOUSTON — Thursday was a busy night at the Houston Independent School District board meeting.

More than 160 people gathered to talk about the issues they have, including their feelings on a multi-billion-dollar bond proposal.

The bond is a hot topic that lawmakers from both political parties have spoken against.

Thursday's board meeting was the last one before the November election and community members came out in droves to talk about the controversial measure one last time before it's on the ballot in less than a month and in the hands of the voters.

There wasn't an empty seat inside the administration building as people lined up to address state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles and the Board of Managers.

HISD's proposed $4.4 billion bond was the featured topic for most.

"Board of Managers, don't expect us to trust you. No trust, no bond," a student said.

Parents felt the same way.

"The people have spoken and our answer is no -- no trust, no bond," a parent said.

Lawmakers were also on hand to speak against the historic measure, which would be the largest in state history.

"I do trust our teachers when they tell us, 'Do not vote for this bond,'" Sen. Molly Cook said.

Cook, Rep. Jolanda Jones and Rep. Gene Wu spoke on behalf of their constituents.

"My issue is that we don't have any faith in Superintendent Miles or this board," Wu said.

The proposed measure, according to HISD, would address three things: creating safe and healthy campuses, making campuses "future-ready" and restoring HISD schools.

Another topic Thursday night was concern over staff terminations and Miles' New Education System that was implemented after the state takeover.

Others spoke in support of the Harvard Elementary School principal who was placed on leave this week.
