DENTON -- The Denton Independent School District Board of Trustees has approved new names for two elementary schools in the district.
The board voted unanimously to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary after a Denton educator, Alice Moore Alexander, who served the community for more than 40 years, Denton ISD said on its website.
“As a board, we’ve always wanted to put the name on a building of someone who has directly impacted the people in our community and Mrs. Alexander certainly fits that description,” Board President Mia Price said. “The renaming of a building is often a difficult decision to make, and we believe with the naming of new elementary, this was the perfect opportunity to honor Mrs. Alexander and keep her name close to the Southeast Denton community that she championed throughout her career and life.”
Robert E. Lee Elementary will become Alice Moore Alexander Elementary starting next school year.
The school district says Alexander taught kindergarten and first grade students for 45 years, spending most of her time at Fred Moore School -- named after her father in 1949.
She began her teaching career in 1928 and passed away at 100 years old in 2007.
“Mrs. Alexander pioneered the work-life integration concept by always being a loving mentor to every child she came in contact with no matter the setting,” John Punch, who nominated Alexander, said. “She was the quintessential educator. For decades, she was a staple in Denton life and was loved by all races and people of every creed.”
The other school the board voted on, which is being built and will open in the fall of 2019, will be named Union Park Elementary School after the subdivision surrounding it.
