Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation donates one millionth book to HISD school

It was a full circle moment because the very first book donated by the foundation's My Home Library program back in 2017 also went to Browning Elementary.

HOUSTON — Former First Lady Barbara Bush was probably beaming down proudly on an HISD elementary school today.

Students at Browning Elementary in north Houston received the one millionth book donated by the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation.

It was a full circle moment because the very first book donated by the foundation's My Home Library program back in 2017 also went to Browning Elementary.

Four hundred excited students cheered when they received a bundle of six free books of their choice.

The program’s mission carries on the legacy of Barbara Bush to empower children with reading skills.

"We can’t expect kids to be great readers if they don't have the tools and resources to practice at home and to build those bonds with their family," President & CEO of the literacy foundation said. "So we're just very excited and I know that she is looking down upon us today just with pride, knowing that her legacy continues."

School and district leaders say the program helps foster students’ education and pushes forward the district’s goals for student literacy.

Special guests "Clifford the Big Red Dog" and "Dog Man" were on hand to celebrate the one millionth book donation.
