HOUSTON — It's that time of year when students of all ages return to the classroom for the new school year.

For many families, that includes taking the traditional first-day-of-school photos of their children and sharing them on social media.

But Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman warns parents to think twice before posting the pictures. He said revealing personal information about your child can be used by predators, scammers and other bad guys.

"Your privacy settings will not always protect you from the dangers of the internet and personal information," Herman warned.

The constable advises parents not to post the following:

  • School name
  • Child's age
  • Teacher's name and grade
  • Identifying features (height, weight, etc.)
  • Overly personal information related to your passwords or security questions

If you have this information in the photo, Herman suggests you blur or cross out the sensitive before sharing it online.
