Search continues for man who stabbed 3 students near Yates High School, HPD says

The Houston Police Department said three students were stabbed during a fight Tuesday night near Yates High School.

HOUSTON — Houston police said they are looking for a man who they believe stabbed three high school students Tuesday night in the Third Ward area.

It happened along Scott Street near Yates High School and the University of Houston.

Police said the stabbing victims were taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Houston Police Department officials said they were involved in some sort of "assault incident." Investigators seemed to focus their attention on two locations -- a METRO bus stop and a light rail stop.

HPD officials said it happened around 5 p.m. when the man and the three teens got into a fight. Authorities said the man pulled out a knife and stabbed them, then everyone ran away.

Witnesses said they saw at least two of the stabbing victims, who were wearing clothes with the Yates High School logo, run inside a Subway for help.

HPD said they're not sure how or why the fight started but they're investigating.

Here's the update police provided at the scene:

The Houston Independent School District issued a statement about three of its students being injured in an "altercation with an unknown individual," although, at this time, it's unclear if it's related to the HPD incident.

"HISD Is aware of an incident that occurred off campus and after school was released involving students at Yates HS. Three of our students were involved in an altercation with an unknown individual. They sustained significant injuries and have been transported to local hospitals. School staff is working to support the students and families. The Houston Police Department was first on the scene and will be handling the investigation. Support services will be available to students and staff on campus tomorrow. We have no additional information on the investigation, or the other individual involved at this time."

HISD said they'll have support services available to students and staff on Wednesday.
