HOUSTON -- A man is dead after his girlfriend shot him during a domestic dispute Saturday morning.
The woman claims it was self-defense.
The shooting happened about 1 a.m. in the 6300 block of Tautenhahn in north Houston.
The man and woman were inside a house when talking turned into arguing, which turned into shooting.
"Both individuals had weapons. The female shot her boyfriend, killed him," said Officer Cory Sharp of the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division.
The man died inside the house. Police did not say if the man fired any shots before he was killed. The Harris County Medical Examiner Office identified him as Kelvin Chaisson. Some residents said he and the woman--who authorities have not identified—were in a current relationship, though others said he was her ex.
One resident said what happened is indicative of how the neighborhood and times have changed.
M.T. Dennis is a minister who spoke of the shooting with friends as they gathered around his table for Bible study.
"She's somebody new in the neighborhood," Dennis said. "I've been here about 43 years and it's never had it to happen on our street."
He said the victim let himself into the woman's home.
"My opinion of it is he shouldn't have had a key," Dennis said. "He shouldn't have been there at one o'clock."
"Instead of getting married, they want to stay together and then that brings about problems but that's life," Rev. Theodore Johnson said. "Things happen."
As they focused on the good book, the Bible study group kept the faith but admitted the way things are going in society, it's getting tougher to hold onto hope.
"When it gets in your neighborhood and on your street, you know, it's kind of like things are not getting any better," Rev. Dennis.
The woman involved in the fatal domestic dispute went downtown to make a statement before she was allowed to leave.
Police said the case will now be referred to the grand jury.
