‘That could have been our momma’ | Trae the Truth helps Houston grandmother attacked at gas station

Surveillance video showed one of the suspects attacking the woman as she lay on the concrete.

HOUSTON — Two teens are under arrest in connection with a brutal beating and robbery that happened last month at a north Houston gas station.

Cameras captured the moments the 15 and 16 year old boys ran up to 60-year-old Sheila Henry, knocking her to the ground, beating her and taking off in her pickup.

The Houston grandma was not going down without a fight.

Henry said the first thing that crossed her mind is how she was going to tell her husband that she gave his truck away. However, she also realizes that this could have ended very differently.

Henry doesn’t remember a lot of what happened on Sept. 23 because it happened so fast.

“I remember getting up off the ground right there,” Henry said.

In addition, she said, “You know how your mind is just going? My mind was just going trying to figure out, ok, how are we going to do this?”

Henry delivers newspapers and was getting ready to check out a new route when the robbery took place.

Video surveillance captured two suspects running up to her.

“No, I thought they were joking,” Henry said. “I was just dumbfounded. I was just looking at them like, ‘What? Give you the keys? Uh-uh. I ain’t giving you these keys.’”

Footage showed Henry falling down as one of the suspects punches her before getting away in her truck.

Houston Police announced they’ve arrested and charged two teen boys with robbery and bodily injury.

Henry said, “That makes me mad with him being so young; just not respecting his elders period.”

She now realizes that fighting back wasn’t the best decision.

She said, “No, I don’t recommend that because that was dumb. A dead person can’t talk.”

Henry’s story has Rapper Trae tha Truth’s attention.

On Instagram he’s posted a video rallying behind her.

He said, “There’s people across the world that want to help her and I feel like it’s only right. We have to stand with her. That could have been our momma, our grandmother.”

Henry said the support has been overwhelming.

“I’ve never had nobody that I could really turn to with problems. People always lean on me,” Henry said.

She said it shows that good can come out of a bad situation.

Trae tha Truth will be hosting an event on Thursday at Taste Bar and Kitchen from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The restaurant is located at 3015 Bagby Street. Houston, TX 77006.

He said part of the restaurant’s proceeds that night will go to Henry.

He’s also started a GoFundMe simply to turn a bad situation into a positive one for her.

Henry does have one tip of advice: always be aware of your surroundings.
