HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — An 18-year-old was taken to the hospital Friday after she was shot in the parking lot of Hastings High School, according to Houston police.
Police said the teenage girl and at least three other people were sitting inside a car in the parking lot of the high school. Someone in the backseat was playing with a gun and at some point, the gun went off, hitting the 18-year-old who was in the driver's seat, police said.
"At this point, we believe it was accidental or negligent would be better," said Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson.
The people in the car were able to move the injured teen from the driver's seat and take her to the West Oaks Urgent Care on Highway 6 near Westheimer Road. The teen was then taken to a hospital where police said she was expected to survive.
Houston police are working with Alief ISD police to get surveillance video. They are also trying to figure out if the victim and the other people inside the car were students.
