Wig stolen from cancer patient's mailbox

Katy residents are on high alert and keeping a close eye on the porches and mailboxes after thieves have been swiping packages in a Katy neighborhood.
Thieves stole a package from Molly Garza's mailbox that contained a wig, something she needed as she goes through chemotherapy.

KATY -- A neighborhood here is dealing with crooks swiping packages from porches and mailboxes.

Molly Garza has been waiting for a special package to arrive to her Lost Creek home.

"Hard to think someone would be so callous or brazen to walk into somebody's mailbox," said Garza. "How can people do that? It's not yours."

What the Grinch behind this Christmas crime didn't realize is what they were stealing from Garza wasn't an average gift.

"I'm sure they were hoping for nice jewelry," she said. "Boy were they probably surprised with a really nice wig."

Garza is fighting breast cancer, and the package was stolen while she and her husband were at chemotherapy.

"Take the junk mail, but not my good wig," she said.

Now she, like the rest of her neighbors, are keeping a close eye on their porches and mailboxes hoping the package pests don't return.

Garza remains in good spirits and says the real gift this Christmas isn't something a lousy criminal can swipe off her porch.

"I can't wait for that survival bell to ring," she said. "That's going to be the best day of my life."

Tips to avoid package thefts

  • Always ask for a tracking number so you can keep track of when it's delivered
  • Request your packages to be dropped off at time when you are home
  • Ask for an alternate drop off location like a back porch or garage
