HOUSTON — A Houston mom is hoping detectives can find the person who shot and killed her son at a northside stop sign.
Houston police say the shooting happened on West Canino Road near I-45 on Monday night around 9:52 p.m.
Family members identified the victim as Ricardo Vega, 27.
“He loved to fish, he loved to cook, he loved to barbecue, his smile could light up a whole room,” Victoria Garcia, Vega’s mother, told KHOU 11.
Vega is the father of an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.
His mother shared the last words she shared with her son, who was one of five children.
“I talked to him last night at 8:42, we had a good conversation, last thing we said to each other is ‘I love you, Mom.’ I said ‘I love you too, mijo,'” Garcia told us.
She lives near the shooting scene and believes her son was coming to visit when he was shot.
“He passed our house, so something happened,” Garcia said.
Vega was alone in a Toyota sedan when he stopped at the stop sign, Houston police said. They believe the shots came from a tan or beige Chevy pickup.
“We happened to have a good citizen that was behind him and had a dashcam that caught the incident right there at the freeway,” HPD Lt. JP Horelica told us.
They're not sure what led to the shooting, but Vega's mother is hoping the suspect will come forward.
“I know you’re someone’s son, I know you’re someone’s grandson, I know you’re someone’s brother, and all I want you to do is accept responsibility for what you did and the precious life you took away from me,” Garcia said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Houston Police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
