HOUSTON — A family is taking legal action against an accused drunk driver after he slammed into a Lyft driver that is now in a coma.
29-year-old Ezatullah Safi was driving the Lyft.
Early Friday morning, Erik De Leon, 21, slammed into the Safi's car, killing his passenger, Dr. Billy Satterfield.
De Leon told police he took tequila shots before the crash on Galveston Road near Pineloch.
Safi is an Afghanistan native who worked as a U.S. military translator before moving to the states. He was driving for Lyft to make extra money for his wife, two young children and one on the way.
“He is still in a coma, he’s on a ventilator. And, so, the prognosis is not good,” Safi’s attorney Muhammed Aziz said.
De Leon is charged with intoxication manslaughter and assault. He was taken to a hospital after the crash.
The District Attorney’s Office is investigating two bars they believe could have over-served De Leon.
