Lubbock police said the victim of an overnight murder case, Zachary David Kafer, 20, was a Texas Tech student. Police were called to the 2400 block of Broadway Avenue at 1:15 Thursday morning for an apparent stabbing.
A police report was short and to the point: "[Victim] was murdered by [suspect]."
Police released the name of the suspect as John Henry Allen, 20. He was held in the Lubbock County Detention Center late Thursday morning. His bond had been set at $500,000.
According to the arrest warrant, Allen confessed to police about stabbing a person after he says he was punched in the face while seated in his car. Allen said he was at Mesquites earlier in the night inquiring about a job as a bouncer then left the bar with another male he had just met. The warrant stated before leaving Broadway, Allen said he needed to take cash out of the ATM located next to Mesquites. Allen said he pulled his car up to the curb directly in front of the ATM when Allen said some males he didn't know began yelling at him. He said one of them with short black hair punched him one time on the head while he was seated in his car.
The warrant said Allen then pulled out his pocket knife and swung it out of the window two or three times and then drove back to his apartment where he and his passenger went to sleep until police knocked on his door. Allen said he cleaned the blood off of the knife before going to sleep. The warrant said there was no visible injury to Allen's head but there did appear to be cuts on his hands. The warrant stated Allen said the cuts were from stabbing the victim. Allen allowed police to search his residence and his vehicle where the knife, believed to the murder weapon, was found.
According to the warrant, a witness, who was an acquaintance of the Kafer said he observed Kafer standing at the drivers side door of a white Scion car and heard Kafer scream in pain. The warrant said the witness saw Kafer was stabbed and saw the stab wound. The warrant said the witness helped transport Kafer to the hospital with the help of Kafer's roommate and that Kafer was unconscious upon reaching the hospital.
