HOUSTON — Houston police have arrested a man in connection with the 2022 shooting death of a man who was killed while preparing meals for homeless people.
Terrance Lewis, 20, was at a friend's southeast Houston apartment on June 15, 2022 when he was gunned down.
Editor's note: The above video originally aired in 2022.
Nineteen months later, HPD said they have identified the killer and Raishard Jamal Potts, 23, has been charged with murder.
Prosecutors say Lewis and Potts were childhood friends. They say the victim may have owed the suspect money.
"No matter what his past history was, or whether or not he did owe this person money, he certainly didn't deserve to have what happened," prosecutor Ashlea Sheridan told us.
Potts has a long criminal history and was already in the Harris County Jail on a 2023 charge of aggravated assault of a security officer.
He's being held on a $250,000 bond on the murder charge.
"The community needs to know he's not out there committing any other new law violations," Sheridan said.
What happened
Lewis and his friend worked for a non-profit organization that feeds the homeless.
While preparing food that summer afternoon, Lewis took some trash out. He returned to the apartment on Tierwester Street near Old Spanish Trail and was shot in the entryway.
Homicide detectives determined the gunshot came from the parking lot but they had few clues at the time.
Crime Stoppers Houston later offered a $30,000 reward for information leading to the killer.
Sheridan said a witness finally came forward and told investigators that he saw Potts kill Lewis.
"Finally, we had a witness who was willing to step up and talk about what happened," Sheridan said.
