Jared Trevino, 18, facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle and causing a fatal crash in Pasadena, Texas

HOUSTON — An 18-year-old whose family says he has autism is accused of stealing vehicles multiple times before a deadly crash earlier this month.

A Tuesday morning hearing for Jared Trevino was reset to Friday. Prosecutors are asking a judge to uphold his bond, saying the teen is a danger as this is the third time he has caused a wreck in a stolen car.

Trevino is charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, burglary of a habitation, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and first-degree felony murder, according to documents filed by the Harris County District Attorney.

The most recent incident that led to Trevino’s arrest involved a stolen Honda sedan. Prosecutors say on Feb. 3 the teen broke into a neighbor's pickup truck and used a garage door opener to gain access to the home. Once inside the home, the suspect is accused of taking the keys to a Honda Accord. Trevino then left the scene in the Honda and ran a red light, crashing into another driver on Spencer Highway and Preston Road.

The victim who was hit, Lorenzo Gomez, was taken to the hospital where he remained in critical condition until he was taken off life support on Feb. 6.

The suspect’s mother told the district attorney’s office the teen has autism but only takes medication for ADHD. The defendant’s mother also admitted the teen had taken vehicles in the past where the keys were readily available.

Previous thefts allegedly occurred when the teen was 17 years old. He allegedly took a Nissan belonging to an employee of his mother’s. He’s also accused of previously stealing his neighbor’s Honda that was later stolen again and involved in the fatal crash.

Trevino will be back in court on Friday, Feb. 22.
