Houston teen protects siblings during apartment break-in; suspect faces court appearance

Jhon Carabali-Gomez, 28, is now charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

HOUSTON — A man accused of breaking into an apartment while children were home alone is expected back in court Thursday morning.

This happened at the Village at Piney Point Apartments in west Houston.

From a recent court hearing, we learned the suspect moved to Houston from Colombia a year ago and is homeless.

Court records claim he broke into an apartment where a 15-year-old girl was inside with her siblings and even asked the girl if she had a boyfriend.

According to court records, Jhon Carabali-Gomez, 28, is now charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary. He appeared in probable cause court on Monday.

In court, it was revealed that after breaking into the apartment at the Village at Piney Point, the 15-year-old girl called her cousin, who owns the apartment.

Carabali-Gomez reportedly left the apartment as the cousin’s security friends arrived to help the children.

According to court records, Carabali-Gomez allegedly raised a screwdriver as if to stab the group before running away.

“The cousin who owned the apartment had gotten home from work. They managed to trap and handcuff him, and then he was arrested by police," the judge read aloud in court.

We’re told the 15-year-old acted quickly, rushing her siblings into another room and locking the door to keep the suspect out.

We will update this story after Carabali-Gomez appears before the judge.
